Unless you’ve been on a digital detox for the past year, you know that video is where social media is heading. Just look at your Facebook newsfeed and you’ll see that it has been taken over by video, especially live video. So we as bloggers need to adapt and start embracing vlogging! If you’ve never vlogged before, Vlog like a Boss is the book you need in your life right now!

Vlog Like a Boss – Book Review

Vlog like a Boss is written by Amy Schmittauer. Amy is the person behind Savvy Sexy Social on YouTube and is a vlogging machine. If anyone can teach you about vlogging, it’s Amy.

First Impressions

My first impressions of the book when I bought it was good. This book is a fairly simple read, not too long so you could definitely read it over the weekend.

The book is well laid out. She starts off by talking about her own YouTube journey. This provides a great lesson to any blogger/vlogger out there that wants to get on the radar of someone better known in their niche. Amy was able to get Gary Vaynerchuk to notice her, just as she was beginning to grow her channel. Being creative is more of an asset than having huge numbers when you are starting out.

The three fears of vlogging

Amy goes through the three fears that people have when they start vlogging:

  • Fear of the Gear
  • Fear of Personality
  • Fear of ROI.

When I tell bloggers that they need to embrace, the common excuses I hear are – “Oh I don’t have a proper camera“, “I hate how I look and sound on camera“, “I don’t have a nice place to film“, “I don’t think I have anything to vlog about” etc.

If you nodded your head to any of those comments, Amy’s book will set you in the right frame of mind. There is a quote that I love from the book, it gives me hope and inspiration.

“You don’t build a portfolio and a career of over 1,000 videos waiting for conditions to be perfect”.

This is the mindset you need to embrace when you start doing video.

Getting to know your reason why

If you’re not sure how vlogging fits in with your blog, Amy has a great statement for you to fill out to help you know you’re why.
“I help____________________________
by vlogging about _____________________
so that I can achieve ____________________”
By filling that statement out, you should know exactly why vlogging will be part of your brand as you grow.

Formulas for Video

Another useful section of Amy’s book is how she breaks down the formula for videos. If you are struggling with structuring your videos, this will help you know exactly what the elements are for a great video. It’ll also provide you with a checklist so you never miss anything.

Take inspiration from this quote Amy writes

“You don’t need a viral video to be a success. You need to prove you can show up”.

From reading the book it’s obvious that like blogging – consistency is key. That’s how the big YouTubers have grown such massive audiences. They create content constantly (say that five times!).

My favourite part of the book

One of my favourite parts of the book is when Amy covers how to get collaborations for your channel. I think this advice is perfect! So many bloggers approach collaborations all wrong. Bloggers that are too obsessed with what’s in it for them and don’t provide the person they will be collaborating with, with any incentive to work with them. If you want to start working with brands / PR / other bloggers – read this chapter!

Vlogging Equipment

Another really useful part of the book is the vlogging equipment recommendation list Amy has provided. The recommendations aren’t actually included in the book, instead, she gives a link that you can go to for up to the minute endorsements. This is a great idea as technology is rapidly changing, so if she spent time in the book giving recommendations, it would be out of date within a year. Instead, in the book, she explains what you should look out for when buying vlogging gear.

Overall thoughts

Overall, I think this book is great for anyone who is a complete newbie to vlogging. If you’ve been vlogging for a while, this book might not be as useful. However if you’ve been vlogging but struggling to grow your audience, this book will help you identify what might be going wrong.

Also, make sure to check out Amy’s YouTube Channel. This is the best of Amy playlist and has some gems of advice on vlogging.
